Because Howard (High School) has failed to meet benchmarks under the federal No Child Left Behind law, it is on the state’s high-priority list
The Hamilton County Board of Education unanimously approved a proposal Thursday from Superintendent Jim Scales to boost local education efforts of black male students.
The plan will cost $152,580, the bulk of which will be spent to pay Dr. Robert L. Green, a professor emeritus from Michigan State University who will direct the project.
“The effort needs to spread districtwide eventually,” Superintendent Jim Scales said. “The plight of this demographic in Hamilton County is critical.”
Black males drop out at higher rates and score lower on standardized tests than any other demographic in Hamilton County, district data shows.
Dr. Green said he will meet today with Lakweshia Tibbs, school and community involvement coordinator for Hamilton County, and James Colbert, a district operations director, to begin discussing focus groups that Dr. Green said will drive the initiative.
