Two snipers opened fire, most likely in revenge for the recent killings of two other blacks at the hands of police, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Situation fluid at this point.
DALLAS- The Dallas Police Department says a man whose picture was circulated by them to the public, has turned himself in and is being interviewed by officers. It’s also reported by the department that a second suspect is in custody, and that a suspicious package near the suspect’s location, has been secured by a bomb squad.
So far, the Dallas Police Chief confirms 11 officers shot, four dead at a Dallas protest Thursday evening.
An earlier statement from Dallas Police Chief Brown released a statement saying:
Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally. Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently underway. No suspects are in custody at this time. We ask that any citizen with information regarding the shootings tonight call 214-671-3482. We will provide more information once it is available. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers tonight.
Protesters and police alike took cover when witnesses reported hearing 50 or more rounds fired during a demonstration in response to recent deadly police shootings across the country.
Disturbing video shows what appears to be officers and possibly several others lying in the street.
Police sources told KDFW one suspect is down while a second possible suspect is in a downtown Dallas garage and wearing a bulletproof vest and tactical gear. Bystanders have been told to shelter in place, according to KTVT.
“The shots were coming from the roof,” one protester told the station. Witnesses reported hearing more than a dozen gunshots that scattered the crowd. That protester said that officers and bystanders alike were in the line of fire.
Police officers were searching for a man with a rifle, according to several reports.
“Everybody was fair game,” The man said. “They were just shooting randomly.”
It’s not yet clear the extent of the officers’ or any bystanders’ injuries.
