Controversial Book Asks ‘Is Marriage for White People?’

Middle class black women are three times as likely to never marry as white women because the the pool of available black men is smaller. However, with a primary source of this problem being a severe educational differential with black women being twice as likely as black men to graduate from college, this problem will soon be affecting white people as well. Just as the black women in the article prefer men of similar education, so do white women. And white women now far outnumber white men among college graduates, so the problem being seen currently in the black community will soon be visiting us.

The single life is a challenge for many people – dating and finding the right romantic partner are not easy. But for one segment of the population, it is even more difficult, according to a new and controversial book.

CBS 2’s Jim Williams takes a look at “Is Marriage for White People?” by Stanford University professor Ralph Richard Banks.

Danielle Smith, 38, and Tiffiney Ross, 29, seem to have it all. They are attractive, well-educated and have successful careers. But we asked them, where are the men?
“That’s what I keep asking myself every day,” Smith said. “I don’t know where they are.”
