Talk About Bad Timing!

Kadish pleads guilty to Israel spying charges

Ben-ami Kadish, a former mechanical engineer for the United States Army, entered a http://www.wvwnews.net/story.php?id=4411 plea on December 30, 2008 as part of a plea deal in which he admitted his role in “passing classified documents” to Israel, “America’s closest ally.”

Kadish, who is now 85, faces a February sentencing date but, according to AP, Kadish won’t go to jail for his confessed crime, since a “prosecutor says the government will not oppose a sentence that calls for no prison time.”

The http://www.wvwnews.net/story.php?id=4567 case officer with Kadish, according to Israeli media, who say that the name of this Israeli spy handler is Yosef Yagur. Pollard, like Kadish, pleaded guilty to a single count of spying for Israel.

The Kadish plea deal wouldn’t have come at a worse time for Israel if the media in the United States were anything like objective. Currently Israel is using munitions provided free by the US taxpayer to attack Palestinians, many of them civilians, in Gaza, while the US government backs Israel’s actions despite the high cost to US standing in the region. If America had a genuinely independent mass media, they would be asking about connections between America’s lockstep support for Israel and the behaviors of both its “closest ally” and the influence of the powerful Israeli lobby on US policy. Meanwhile, a campaign to free Jonathan Pollard is in high gear, with a number of “Jewish leaders” and groups, as well as the State of Israel, calling for the outgoing President George Bush to grant him a pardon. Despite the heavy pressure, such a decision would seriously harm morale in America’s military and intelligence community. According to the Israelis, William Clinton allegedly agreed to free Pollard as part of a package to get the Jewish State to sign  an agreement with the Palestine Liberation Organization, but balked when CIA head George Tenet, reflecting opinions in the US intelligence world, threatened to quit. (Tenet has since been accused of making “anti-Semitic” statements). At the time, no fewer than seven former U.S. Secretaries of Defense, along with four former Directors of Naval Intelligence outspokenly opposed Clinton’s planned pardon as well. There has been speculation that Pollard’s information may have cost lives when it was swapped by Israel with the Soviets and/or others.

The Free Jonathan Pollard campaign is particularly virulent. One ad in Israel compares George Bush to leaders of  Hizbollah and Pollard’s captivity to the case of two Israeli soldiers captured by the Lebanese Shia group designated by both the United States and Israel as terrorist. Israel even went to far as to grant Pollard citizenship, and the Jerusalem City Council designated a Freedom for Jonathan Pollard Square near the official residence of the Israeli Prime Minister.

According to media myth, Israel is America’s closest friend and ally, especially in the “War on Terror.” Some even seek to ideologically “admit” Israel to the ranks of Western civilization as its frontline defender against Islamist extremism, a problem which was brought within Western gates largely as a result of Israel’s supporters within Western nations and their influence on immigration policy.

Clearly, Israel and America have different foreign policy interests, at least occasionally, something that is not reflected in real world actions by the US. Yet Israel seems to return little of the respect or loyalty of the United States (and her put upon taxpayers), something unlikely to change with the new, incoming Presidency of http://www.wvwnews.net/story.php?id=6180.
