Regulating state benefits to illegal mestizos called ‘bigoted’

A protest on Monday at the Nebraska Capitol criticized Gov. Dave Heineman’s attempt to tighten rules for distributing state benefits.

The group called Heineman’s plan bigoted.

The governor said he wants a law requiring all state and local governments to verify the immigration status of anyone applying for benefits.

2006 law said Nebraska high school graduates could pay in-state tuition, even if they are illegal immigrants, but the governor said he supports repeal of the measure.
