An A-Maze-ing Cesspool Evening

From the Files of Winston Smith

People occasionally email me and ask me how we, your hard-working and dedicated Political Cesspool staff, maintain our passion, how we keep the fire in our bellies well-fueled, and how we ceaselessly fight the good fight day after day and night after night. And I always tell those folks that emails such as theirs are a big reason why we keep going as we do. I really mean that, my friends. We sincerely appreciate all the emails and messages of support and encouragement we receive from you. Every good word you send us is like a splash of cool water in our faces between the rounds of a boxing match.

All of us here work regular full-time jobs to support our families, and our Political Cesspool activities are purely voluntary. And believe me, it’s tough sometimes, doing show prep, lining up guests, answering inquiries, going to speaking engagements, and all the other things that make up the Political Cesspool package. But every one of us are held by the powerful conviction that we are doing the right thing, and that God has given us this opportunity to serve our people, our forefathers, and our descendants. We take it very seriously. But, you can’t be gladiatorial all the time. It’s been quite a while since your hard-working and dedicated Political Cesspool staff took some time off to enjoy each other’s company away from the studio. But this past Sunday afforded just such an opportunity, as the Political Cesspool staff and their families enjoyed an evening at the remarkable corn maze and pumpkin patch at Jones Orchard in Memphis.

By 6:00PM, we and our families had gathered at the site, except for my good friend, my elder brother in arms, Eddie “The Bombadier” Miller, who had to work (we missed you, Eddie!). I have to say, my friends, anytime I get to be in the presence of James Edwards, Bill Rolen, and Geoff Melton, I already know I’m going to have a great time. And the evening could not have been better; the weather was mild with a slight breeze, the sky was clear, our children were laughing and shouting, our spirits were high. . .it was just perfect. We had an excellent time discussing some of the issues of the day, reflecting on some “behind the scenes” insights at the Political Cesspool, and discussing plans for upcoming projects. Then, we all jumped into a trailer that was hitched to a tractor, sat on bales of hay, and headed for the pumpkin patch, where the Rolen, Melton, and Smith children all searched for the perfect pumpkins, with inspired success. (It was quite a challenge convincing my young son that James’s bald head was not an especially over-ripe pumpkin.) With pumpkins claimed and gathered, we re-boarded the hay ride and made our way to the maze entrances. There were two mazes available, one in the shape of a dragon, and the other in the shape of a knight with a sword, doing battle with the dragon maze. Mr. Jones had aerial photos of the layout, and I was as impressed as I could be. I don’t know how many acres the thing covered, but I’m pretty sure it could qualify as a small county. And the precision of the layout was simply remarkable. Mr. Jones told us that a gentleman from Iowa used a Global Positioning System (GPS) to sculpt the maze. Folks, if you want to be a-maze-d, I encourage you visit the Jones Orchard Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch.

Anyhow, Mr. Jones supplied us with maps with which to navigate our way through the multitude of hairpin turns, twists, and whirls. But as we entered the dragon maze, we men-folk did what guys always do – we decided we didn’t need a map. So we gave them to our wives, who walked ahead of us while we, naturally, talked about politics, society, religion, and Cesspool projects. As we walked between the walls of corn stalks, we were awestruck by the depth of our conversation and by the beauty of the evening. All in all, we were inspired to redouble our efforts and continue our bare-knuckle brawling as the South’s Foremost Populist Radio Program. I truly wish all of you were so blessed to have evenings such as we had this past weekend.  Fellowship and relaxation with friends and family certainly ministers to one’s soul and reminds us of why we fight.
