Following Pro-Sanctuary Vote, Social Security Amendments Filed On Labor-HHS Bill

Last week, by a 52-42 margin, senators voted to table an amendment (SA 3277) sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) to the commerce, justice, and science (CJS) spending bill (H.R. 3093), which, if adopted, would have prevented Federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants from being awarded to states and municipalities with sanctuary policies in place. It is believed that if the Vitter amendment had been adopted, most cities would have stopped providing sanctuary to illegal aliens in order to retain COPS funding. When the Senate reconvenes at 2 p.m. today, senators will resume debate on the labor, health and human services (HHS), and education appropriations bill (H.R. 3043). Several amendments addressing immigration concerns – including two speaking to Social Security – have been filed.
