Cho: Hating ‘Rich Kids’

Unintended consequences at Virginia Tech?

AFTER AMERICA’S worst school shooting left 32 innocent people dead at Virginia Tech, along with the gunman, Cho Seung-hui, a Korean immigrant aged 23, special interests continue to do their best to play down Cho’s hatred for “rich kids” as he killed them. While college is not a cheap place to get an education, chances are better than average many ‘rich kids’ attending classes at Virginia Tech did indeed come from well-off families, whose tuition helps pay the instructors and keeps the lights on. Not surprisingly, after having viewed several hours worth of news footage from Virginia Tech it is easy to conclude that most of the student body and many if not nearly all of the victims were Caucasian, ie; rich white kids.

Ironically, a Virginia Tech / white privilege Google search reveals that Cho’s university of choice — where he sat and listened — made it a matter of policy to educate young minds by “investigating whiteness” in terms of race and culture in many of its educational offerings. Since most universities have become agents of political and social change, unintended consequences notwithstanding, is it possible the quiet loner Cho Seung-hui may have been paying more attention than people think?
