Al Qaeda terrorist Dhiren Barot was given nine UK passports by the Home Office. Barot, who planned to attack London with a radioactive “dirty bomb”, had two passports with false names and seven in his own name. He was able to obtain so many by claiming to have lost his documents, and simply applying to replace them.

Barot had worked as an airline ticket clerk in London as he planned the terror attacks on the capital, as well as using a radioactive bomb he had planned to put limousines which had been packed with gas cylinders under office blocks to cause carnage and mayhem.

In another case, two British passports had been obtained by a Moroccan, Salaheddine Benyaich who has been jailed in connection with bombings in Casablanca which killed 44 people. He used the identity of a Brighton man to con officials into giving him a passport. These two cases are just the tip of the iceberg, as the Home Office admits it has issued 10,000 UK passports to criminals and terrorists. The Home Office stated that approximately 16,500 fraudulent passport applications were made annually, and around two thirds of them went undetected.
