Join us in demanding our town back!
Hagia Sophia Campaign Helps Slow Turkish EU Hopes
Famagusta, Varosha being the modern part of the city, is currently a 'ghost-town', an abandoned city, empty since the displacement of its Greek citizens in the summer of 1974. In August 1974, Turkey carried out the second part of its military invasion against Cyprus. Turkey still occupies 36% of Cyprus.
This is a Global Campaign for the Return of Varosha to its Lawful Inhabitants, displaced by force in 1974. In a time where International Law and respect for Human Rights is in decline, you can join us in demanding that right prevails over wrong, that States comply with their international obligations in maintaining peace and order and that the people of Famagusta return back to their homes after 33 years in exile!
Please read our Legal Basis, the status of Famagusta today and its history. By signing you will be endorsing the following statement:
"WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, DEMAND THE RETURN OF VAROSHA TO ITS LAWFUL INHABITANTS THAT WERE DISPLACED IN 1974, ACCORDING TO PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW, FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE RESOLUTIONS OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL AND THE RELEVANT RULINGS OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS".
Who will be receiving the signatures and when?
The petition is scheduled to run until August 14th, 2007. Before the end of this year, it will be delivered to the following:
The Heads of Government of the Five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council:
The President of the United States of America
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
The President of the French Republic
The President of the Russian Federation
The President of the People's Republic of China
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey
The Secretary-General of the United Nations
The President of the European Commission
The President of the Council of the EU
The President of the European Parliament
The above are all persons that by a positive action can create the momentum for our petition's goal. The Turkish Prime Minister, currently Mr. R.T.Erdogan, can virtually carry out the goal of our petition, as it is Turkey that has occupied the north part of Cyprus since 1974, including Famagusta.
Finally, the following will also receive the petition:
The Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic
The President of the Republic of Cyprus
The leader of the Turkish Cypriot community
UN Security Council Resolution 550 (1984)
"...5. Considers attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the United Nations..."
