Nationalists Seek New EU Opt-Out

Denmark should be exempt from EU immigration regulations, according to Danish People’s Party candidate

MortenMesserschmidt, a candidate for the European Parliament for the DanishPeople’s Party, has proposed that Denmark seek permission to beexcluded from EU immigration regulations.

Parliament iscurrently discussing eliminating the country’s four existing EUopt-outs – including not using the euro – but Messerschmidt saysconflicts between the country’s strict immigration laws and the EU’sfreedom of movement regulations require a fifth.

‘We can see that there are a number of policy areas where Danishregulations are watered down by the EU. We’ve seen the European Courtof Justice get involved in our immigration policy and I think it isimportant that we stop that sort of thing with an opt-out.’Hesaid secrecy surrounding new regulations for the free movement oflabour expected to be announced by the European Commission this summermeant the opt-out was necessary.
