Handyman charged with murder of 61-year-old British woman

A handyman named Omar Reid, 30, has been charged with the murder of 61-year-old British expat Barbara Scott-Jones, whose battered corpse was found in a pit near her holiday home in Jamaica. In the case of Barbara Scott-Jones, she married a much younger Jamaican named Delroy Scott and settled on the island after divorcing her English life mate. After that second marriage ended, Barbara’s instincts kicked back in, and she was said to long for her grandchildren and England once again. She was overseeing renovations to her house in Jamaica with a view to selling it when she was allegedly murdered. Her head was beaten in by Omar Reid, who stands 6’4″ and is powerfully built, police say, and she was hastily buried in the entrance to the septic tank near the house. Barbara apparently had a “relationship” with Reid. Cops said that Reid is known as a “jiggler,” patois for a black man who preys on older white women.
A neighbor said, “I see her as an unfortunate victim of the ‘rent-a-dread’ business: white women who come to Jamaica expecting to link up with a dreadlocked Rastafarian. I know of some Englishwomen who come here specifically for romance, and there are Jamaican men who live off them. I wouldn’t put Barbara in that bracket. But why didn’t she look for someone of her own social status. I don’t necessarily mean colour, but age, background and interests?”
