THE DECISION of the United States government to supply http://www.wvwnews.net/story.php?id=3892 contravenes international law and the mechanisms of the United Nations, according to Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin.
Commenting on the authorisation by President George W Bush on March 19 to create a http://www.wvwnews.net/story.php?id=3381 in Kosovo, based on the existing Kosovo Protection Corps (formerly the Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA), and for it to be armed by NATO, Mr Churkin stated: “We think this is a mistake, which results from disrespect for international law.” The envoy added that Washington’s decision constituted “a political provocation in a delicate situation.”
President Bush justified his decision to supply arms to the newly-independent state of Kosovo on the basis it would “strengthen the security of the United States and promote world peace.”However, according to Security Council Resolution 1244 the supplying of weapons to Kosovo, with the exception to peacekeeping forces which make up KFOR, is explicitly prohibited. The Russian government’s envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, expressed “alarm” and “concern” at the American President’s decision, and contended that “the decision in reality is a means of compelling Serbs by force to live in an independent Kosovo.”
