Former Durham district attorney Michael Nifong has filed for bankruptcy protection from his creditors, including the three Duke University lacrosse players he unsuccessfully charged with rape.

Nifong lists liabilities of $180.3 million and assets of $243,898 on documents filed Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Durham. The three lacrosse players he filed charges against – Collin Finnerty, David Evans and Reade Seligmann – are listed as unsecured creditors owed $30 million each.

Three other former lacrosse players who sued Nifong, among others, in December also are listed as unsecured creditors owed $30 million. The six players’ claims make up the vast majority of Nifong’s listed liabilities.

Nifong stepped down from his position as Durham DA in 2007 and was stripped of his law license after widespread accusations of unethical behavior in his prosecution of the players, whom he had charged with sexually assaulting an escort service dancer at a party in 2006.
