Oxfordshire braces itself as local MP flees to Africa

The people of the Oxfordshire villages of Standlake and Northmoor areas are bracing themselves for the worst flooding expected for 60 years.

In a classic example of British bulldog spirit the towns have witnessed a superhuman effort with local council workers, police, firemen and local people who have not been able to get into work, work shoulder to shoulder preparing defences to try and minimize the damage expected when the wall of water moving down the River Thames strikes in the early hours of tomorrow morning. Thousands of sand bags have been delivered and put into place to try and avert the widespread damage to property witnessed in towns along the Severn.

In nearby Witney Bridge Street and Mill Street are closed to traffic as both streets are flooded and impassable. Dozens of residents have been being evacuated and businesses closed for the foreseeable future.

While householders, council staff and the rescue services carry on a Herculean effort one person is noticeably absent from today’s hard work. The local Tory MP has abandoned his constituents and is currently in Rwanda ahead of the launch of the Conservative Party’s report into fighting global poverty tomorrow. The local MP for the Witney constituency is David Cameron, Leader of the Conservative Party. He told the BBC that he could not let down the people he had arranged to visit. In a repeat performance of former PM Tony Blair, strutting around the Third World trying to look important, Africa takes priority for David Cameron over the elderly and vulnerable of his own constituency.

While “Dave” is busying discussing with aid agencies and the Rwanda government the more effective implementation of international aid, his constituents back in Oxfordshire will be right to question just when will our elected politicians give priority to their own and realize the old adage that charity begins at home. Cameron’s escape from the awful weather of Oxfordshire will not be forgotten by many voters here come the next election.
