Crisis, Violence Looms Large For Kosovo Albanian Regime

New wave of bloodshed may be on the horizon

Only a week or so after the initial elation at President Bush’s promise in Albania to work for Kosovo independence, prime minister of the Albanian regime in Kosovo, Agim Ceku, warned of a “crisis of trust” among Albanians for those very same words of promise.

“We see that every day the chances of a joint [UN resolution are being exhausted,” admits Ceku and threatens unilateral declaration of independence. “We would like to have a U.N. resolution, but if not, there are other alternatives,” says Ceku.

Ceku’s president, Fatmir Sejdiu, had a similar message to the EU’s Kosovo Envoy, Stefan Lehne, of whom he demanded a specific date that Kosovo will become an independent state.

“A clear (Security Council) statement on the date of Kosovo’s independence is very important for us,” Sejdiu told journalists in Pristina after meeting the EU envoy to Kosovo, Stephan Lehne.Because independence is off the table, Lehne could not supply the date Sajdiu naively demanded but instead reminded the “president” that EU is interested in a UN resolution to the Kosovo status and not necessarily in its independence.

The decision on Kosovo “needs the best possible basis, the strongest legitimacy available. And this is a Security Council resolution,” said Lehne and warned that any “Unilateral action or other irresponsible behavior in Kosovo would take away all the goodwill that you have received.”

By referring to other, Lehne was presumably referencing Albanian threat of violence issued earlier in the week.
