Bangaloring Pasadena

Globalsim is local news

Outsourcing strikes again. First it was the assembly line. Then it was the corporate call-center. Now it’s the newsgathering process.

A website that advertises itself as “All Pasadena, All the Time,” is looking for reporters who can cover local news and events — from India.

“I think it could be a significant way to increase the quality of journalism on the local level without the expense that is a major problem for local publications,” James Macpherson, head of the two-year-old website, tells the Associated Press. “Whether you’re at a desk in Pasadena or a desk in Mumbai, you’re still just a phone call or e-mail away from the interview.”

We searched his site for some of the stories, which were supposed to be published online today, but we couldn’t find any that appeared to have been produced overseas. We’ll check again later and update this posting if we find anything of interest. The Los Angeles Times reports that one of the new hires lives in Mumbai and will be make $12,000 a year and the other lives in Bangalore and will earn a little more than half that amount.
