Pupils and teachers have been told that they should not stare at Muslims, in case it causes offence.
The advice comes in a document which is intended to educate against intolerance based upon religion, and tells teachers that they should make sure children are aware of the different forms “Islamophobia” can take – including staring.
Politicians have attacked the document, saying it goes over the top.
The document issued by Learning Teaching Scotland states that Muslims may choose to wear clothes or show their faith in a way which makes them more visible. Staring at women in headscarves, for example, is a form of discrimination the document goes on to say.Osama Saeed, a spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, accused officials of going too far. “There are far more serious elements of Islamophobia. People look at all sorts of things — that can just be a glance. A glance and a stare are two different things — glances happen naturally when all sorts of things catch your eye whereas a stare is probably gawking at something.
“Personally I have not encountered much of a problem with people staring. I don’t know how you legislate for that.”
Children naturally look at people who are dressed differently, and it would be very difficult to pass legislation to stop them.
