A Georgia mother is being hailed as a hero after she did what she had to do to protect her 6-month-old baby, which ultimately cost her life.

WSB reports that 33-year-old Jessica Arrendale was out with her husband, Antoine Davis, on Saturday night when he became “belligerently drunk and abusive” towards her. Davis chased her up the stairs of their three-story home where Arrendale tried to fight him off with a baseball bat.

Enraged, the 30-year-old former Marine overpowered her and took the bat, striking her several times with it. Throughout the scuffle Arrendale had 6-month-old Cobie in her arms, who suffered severe trauma to her head which the family suspects was from being hit by the bat.

Arrendale then ran into the bathroom upstairs and locked herself and her daughter inside. Davis, undeterred, grabbed his rifle and kicked in the door.

Once in the bathroom, Davis shot Arrendale in the head while she cradled her daughter in her arms, killing her instantly. Somehow, the child ended up falling into the toilet bowl with her mother’s dead body covering her.

“He shot her and they (police) don’t know how she was able to twist her body and fall literally in the opposite direction,” Arrendale’s mother, Teresa Ionniello said. Instead of falling onto the floor, Ionniello said her daughter fell over the toilet, dropping little Cobie into the water-filled bowl.

“She had pure will,” Ionniello said. “She wanted that baby to live.”

Police later responded to the residence, but were unable to contact anybody inside the home and feared that if they stormed it they would cause even more violence.

One they finally entered the home, 13 hours later, police discovered Arrendale shot to death in the bathroom. Her body was partly covering Cobie, who had been inside the toilet since the shooting.

Arrendale’s family believes that Davis would have killed the baby as well had she not been hidden by her mother’s body.

“She was the hero,” Ionniello said, “because her last breath was saving the child.”

Upon searching the home, police found Davis dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The baby was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. She’s currently in DFACS custody, but Ionniello hopes to bring her home soon to join her 15-year-old sister, who she’s currently caring for.

Friends and family have set up a gofundme page to help offset the cost of the funeral and aid in the education of Arrendale’s children.
